The Human Factors Engineering Analyst supports our Purpose by designing, studying, and analyzing data to make recommendations for human factors within the Flight Operations department. This role conducts supporting research and presents findings based on their results. The Human Factors Engineering Analyst is a strategic thinker who is excited to make a meaningful impact at Southwest Airlines.

Job Summary
  • The Human Factors Analyst provides in-depth analysis of data collected from Human Factors (HF) studies as well as assisting the Human Factors Engineering Team providing Human Factors insights based on analysis of safety related data (both qualitative and quantitative). The role of the Human Factors Analyst includes, but is not limited to, providing scientific based research support, data analysis, and Human Factors education to other Flight Operations groups. This position works closely with the Human Factors Engineering Group to develop Human Factors recommendations to be delivered to appropriate Teams within Flight Safety and across Flight Operations.

Responsibilities
  • Research voluntary safety reports (ASAP), flight monitoring data (FDAP), Pilot Fatigue events, and Safety Assurance reports in order to assist in devising and communicating recommendations to appropriate departments
  • Collect, analyze data, and assist present results/recommendations from Human Factors studies
  • Conduct classification of qualitative data and research novel ways to analyze and visualize data outputs
  • Help identify hazards, analyze risks, validate, and verify effectiveness of Flight Operations Safety recommendations utilizing a human factors perspective
  • Collaborate with the ASAP Event Review Team, Fatigue Safety Advisory Group and FDAP Monitoring Team to provide Human Factors inputs, analyses, and recommendations
  • Collaborate with the FAA, universities, NASA, and other organizations on grants/research studies to benefit training, procedures, and RRM across the airline.
  • Represent the Flight Operations Safety Team on behalf of SWA Flight Operations at industry events and as part of industry trade groups

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis principles/techniques
  • Skilled in analytical, investigative, and problem solving
  • Skilled in organization with strong attention to detail
  • Skilled in data analysis software such as SPSS, R, SAS
  • Skilled in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R, etc.)
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Ability to work under tight time constraints to meet deadlines
  • Ability to communicate in a flexible and effective manner
  • Ability to understand and apply Human Factors principles to a multitude of projects
  • Ability to use metric development principles in the creation of research items and scales
  • Knowledge of Alteryx and Tableau are preferred.
Education
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree

Experience
  • Intermediate level experience, fully functioning broad knowledge in:
    • Human Factors or Social Sciences research
    • Data collection
    • Data analysis
    • Data visualization

  • Ability to perform work duties from [limited space work station/desk/office area] for extended periods of time
  • Ability to communicate and interact with others in the English language to meet the demands of the job
  • Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed and accuracy to meet the demands of the job
