Position Overview

The Corrections Maintenance Worker position, located in Cook County, performs maintenance work below the journeyman level at Illinois Youth Center-Chicago.

The ideal candidate would not only have experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds, but also be motivated to instruct youth that have been committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice to complete these work tasks.

This position is part of the team of Maintenance staff that work to maintain the buildings and grounds of IYC Chicago. We encourage all qualified applicants to apply!

Essential Functions

• Performs maintenance work below the journeyman level in the repair of institutional buildings, machinery, and equipment.


• Assigns maintenance or repair tasks to youth performing maintenance repairs.


• Communicates with Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Stationary Engineer-Assistant Chief about the needs of the institution.


• Accountable for all tools and equipment belonging to the institution.


• Handles minor electrical problems or instructs other employees to do so in his absence.


• Supervises the operation of a small maintenance or repair shop within the institution.


• Coordinates vehicle repair and maintenance as per Administrative Directive.


• Cleans and services grease trap bi-weekly or as needed.


• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years high school.

2. Requires one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience applying knowledge of the machinery and equipment used in buildings and grounds maintenance.

2. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in the economical usage of materials and supplies.

3. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience of planning and laying out work according to requirements of assignment, and to lead youth by example and instruction.

4. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience in enforcing disciplinary, safety, security, and custodial measures for the control of youth.

5. Prefers at least one (1) year of experience applying knowledge of institutional rules, regulations, and requirements for managing youth behavior.

Conditions of Employment

• Requires the ability to lift and carry containers / equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.


• Requires completion of an approved pre-service training course within six (6) months of employment.


• Requires the ability to pass an IDOC / IDJJ background check.


• Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.


• Requires the ability to comply with all local and federal health requirements and / or mandates.
