Border Patrol Agents who join the force on or after January 8, 2024, shall receive attractive incentives of $10,000 for their recruitment upon the completion of their training at the academy. Further, they shall be entitled to an additional $10,000 incentive after rendering three years of satisfactory service.

Pay Grade 5 and 7 Compensation

The remuneration for recently hired Border Patrol Agents who belong to GL-5 and GL-7 grade levels can be anywhere between $46,495 and $83,661. Their pay is determined according to their grade level, duty location, and work schedule, including overtime.

Salary for GL-9

The salary range for recently hired Border Patrol Agents at GL-9 grade level varies between $59,021 to $95,192, depending primarily on duty location, grade level, and work schedule. In addition to base pay, fully trained agents may be eligible for up to 25% additional pay, as per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This position offers a career ladder of three grade levels, starting with GL-9, followed by GS-11 and GS-12. You can advance to the next higher grade without re-applying provided you complete 52 weeks in each grade level as per the promotion criteria.

Qualifications:

To be considered for a GL-5 grade level, you need to meet the following requirements:

The ideal candidate must possess at least one year of relevant work experience which highlights their leadership skills, ability to make informed decisions, and remain composed in high-pressure scenarios. Additionally, they should have excellent learning capabilities to acquire knowledge of regulations, methodologies, and techniques through hands-on training or classroom instruction. Furthermore, the candidate should be proficient in gathering accurate information through observation, interrogation and analysis of information contained within documents and records

Possession of a bachelor's degree or satisfactory completion of a full four-year course of study in any area leading to a bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university will suffice as a replacement for education; alternatively, if a candidate is due to earn their bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university within 9 months of the application deadline, they may apply, but they must provide all official or unofficial transcripts before the deadline

In order to be eligible for the GL-7 grade level, you must have one of the following qualifications:

This work experience could include training others, managing finances, enforcing codes, ensuring compliance, engaging in corrections, providing security, serving in the military, or working as an emergency responder

Education Replacement: In order to qualify for this position, applicants must possess a bachelor's degree with exceptional academic performance, which could be based on their class ranking, a grade-point average that exceeds 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or their membership in an honor society. Another option is to demonstrate that they will finish their bachelor's degree program with Superior Academic Achievement. Alternatively, candidates can substitute their education with one full year of graduate-level training in a field related to law enforcement from an accredited academic institution. Potential areas of study include but are not limited to criminal justice, homeland security, justice studies, law enforcement, courts and judicial systems, forensic technology, forensic psychology, or corrections and rehabilitation. This training must be finished within 9 months of the announcement's closing date

The candidate's combination of work experience and academic background will be evaluated through a review of their resume and official or unofficial transcripts that were submitted along with their job application.

If you have a background in law enforcement or military law enforcement, you may be eligible for consideration at the GL-9 level:

To qualify for this position, you need to have at least one year of specialized work experience at a level equivalent to the next lower grade. This experience should demonstrate your ability to enforce local, state, and/or federal laws and regulations in a law enforcement capacity.

No alternative for education is available for this particular level.

Other Requirements:

This position requires applicants to hold U.S. citizenship.

To be eligible, you must have maintained your main residency in the United States (including protectorates recognized by international law) for a minimum of three out of the past five years.

The Border Patrol Agent position is subject to retirement provisions for law enforcement personnel, as stated in Public Law 100-238. To be eligible for selection, candidates must not have reached their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03.

Veterans Preference: For those who are eligible, there is an opportunity for an excepted service Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA), which is not bound by age restrictions.

Upon commencement of your employment, you will be assigned to attend the U.S. Border Patrol Academy located in Artesia, New Mexico, where you will undergo an extensive training program for approximately six (6) months focused on education on immigration and nationality laws, enforcement of laws, USBP-specific operations, driving instruction, physical techniques, firearms training, as well as other related courses. Additionally, you will receive language instruction to gain proficiency in the Spanish language and evaluated on your linguistic capabilities.
