Surgical Assistant

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Surgical Assistant to join our team. As a Surgical Assistant, you will provide support and assistance to surgeons during surgical procedures. You will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth flow of the operating room and the safety and well-being of the patients.

In this role, you will be responsible for preparing the operating room by ensuring that all necessary supplies and equipment are readily available. You will assist the surgeon by handing them instruments and supplies as needed, as well as suturing wounds, applying dressings, and providing post-operative care to patients. You will also be responsible for maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room and adhering to infection control protocols and guidelines.

To excel in this role, you must have a strong attention to detail, excellent manual dexterity, and the ability to work well under pressure. You should also have a solid understanding of surgical procedures and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to work as part of a team is essential in this role, as you will be working closely with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities

• Prepare the operating room by ensuring that all necessary supplies and equipment are readily available
• Assist the surgeon by handing them instruments and supplies as needed
• Suture wounds and apply dressings under the direction of the surgeon
• Provide post-operative care and instructions to patients
• Maintain a sterile environment in the operating room and adhere to infection control protocols and guidelines
• Assist with positioning and prepping patients for surgery
• Monitor the patient's vital signs during surgery and alert the surgeon to any changes or concerns
• Perform other duties as assigned by the surgeon or operating room supervisor

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework preferred
• Completion of a Surgical Assistant program or equivalent experience
• At least 2 years of experience working as a Surgical Assistant in a hospital or clinical setting
• Strong understanding of surgical procedures and protocols
• Excellent manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
• Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast-paced environment
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
• Knowledge of infection control protocols and guidelines
• Detail-oriented and able to maintain a sterile environment in the operating room
• Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or willingness to obtain it within the first 3 months of employment
• Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift heavy objects as needed
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and on-call as required
