What to Expect
Location & Reporting: The location of this role is FLEXIBLE as long as you are near one of our major facilities in North America or Europe. Suitable locations include the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Reno, Austin, Buffalo, Berlin, and Amsterdam. Most of the Product Knowledge team, including the Senior Manager of Product Knowledge to whom this role reports, is currently based in the Bay Area.
Your Submission: Please include with your resume an example or two of your writing that explains a technical concept to a non-technical audience.
The Team:
Tesla’s Product Knowledge team is responsible for ensuring that Tesla’s global employees, customers, and other stakeholders are knowledgeable about Tesla’s products and the ways in which they contribute to Tesla’s mission. Our team produces internal and external educational content about Tesla products. We also manage company-wide product updates, support events, and partner with technical and non-technical teams throughout the business on product messaging. We pride ourselves on creating fun, engaging, accessible, learner-friendly content that models Tesla’s culture and results in employees and customers alike feeling confident in and connected to Tesla’s products. This educational content includes videos, vehicle user interface flows, mobile app flows, internal communications, reference guides, online courses, live instructor-led sessions, websites, and more. We cover our vehicles, their accessories, our solar and energy storage offerings, factories, robots, and the software and firmware that support them. We’re a small, highly visible team with a large and important body of work. As such, the pace is fast, and change is constant. We’re always juggling multiple projects. We benefit from a huge variety of work (no two weeks are the same), and we have fun doing it. Plus, we get to work closely with the most exciting products in the world.
The Role:
Your primary responsibilities will be writing and reviewing copy that teaches about Tesla’s products: video scripts, on-screen text for videos, video titles and descriptions, language for learning experiences on our vehicles’ screens and in the Tesla mobile app, internal guides, web posts, and more. You will also craft responses to questions from stakeholders like customers, customer-facing employees, executive leadership, and policymakers. Your expertise on Tesla products and education will be leveraged to guide the learning design, user experience design, and visual direction of our deliverables. You’ll be responsible for reviewing drafts of these deliverables before they’re posted. You will also play a leading role in measuring and communicating the impact of the educational resources that we create.
We’re looking for:
An exceptional writer with deep knowledge of automotive and clean energy technologies who is skilled at converting highly technical details into product messaging and education that is understandable and compelling to the public. This role sits between our customers and our technical teams—You’ll need to be able to understand and communicate with both groups. You will interface with world-class engineers and designers, and you must be able to “speak their language” so that you can continuously learn from them (and them from you). You will maintain an expertise on Tesla products that requires this technical literacy. You’ll nurture a closeness with Tesla customers and customer-facing teams made possible by your innate personability and impeccable communication skills. You will be relied upon to provide customer and educational perspectives to Tesla’s technical teams to help improve our products—making them easier to use and more delightful to customers.
You’ll thrive if eager to learn, keen to move quickly, open to feedback, and outspoken with your ideas. You’ll love your work if you lean into change and innovation and take a genuine interest in the products with which you’ll be working.
What You’ll Do
Write and review copy for all types of resources produced by the Product Knowledge team
Write clearly and concisely with the Tesla voice and learner experience top of mind
Provide UX and visual direction based upon your knowledge of Tesla products and how adults learn
Develop and maintain your expertise in all Tesla products
Develop and maintain your expertise in modern learning approaches
Support the production of non-written aspects of our resources—function not only as a copywriter but also as a learning designer
Review content for product accuracy, educational effectiveness, brand representation, and learner experience
Nourish close partnerships with Tesla’s technical and customer-facing teams
Measure the impact of our team’s deliverables through surveys, telematics, customer support data, and more
Manage multiple projects with changing scopes and timelines
Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels and across organizations
Test product features and provide feedback
Model passion for Tesla’s products and mission
Model an inclusive, fun, creative, results-driven culture
What You’ll Bring
Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills (experience in professional copywriting is preferred but not required)
Familiarity with adult learning theory and understanding of effective modern educational techniques
Deep knowledge of automotive and clean energy technologies
Ability to translate highly technical information into language that is clear, concise, and educational
An eye for learning design and user experience
Ability to plan, execute, ship, and monitor multiple projects simultaneously
Happy working in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
Willingness to travel occasionally, including overseas
Passion for several of the following and interest in learning more: engineering, cars/trucks, the future of mobility, sustainable energy, manufacturing, robotics, and AI.
Bonuses (not required):
Background (formal or informal) in engineering
Specific knowledge of Tesla products
Graphic design and/or video editing skills
Experience with game design and gamification
Multilingual abilities
Experience driving a variety of vehicles in a variety of conditions
