SUMMARY


The Bilingual Spanish-English speaking Certified Doula will provide perinatal and lactation education, family planning education, advocacy, labor and birth support, postpartum care, and lactation counseling support for pregnant and postpartum mothers and persons in Venice and South Bay in Los Angeles County, California, on the Venice Family Clinic Community Doula Program.


This is a temporary, grant-funded, part-time, non-benefitted position. The 1099 independent contractor will be contracted with Happy Mama Healthy Baby Alliance (http://motherbabysupport.net). This hybrid virtual and in-person position is in Southern and Western Los Angeles County, California. Applicants must reside in Los Angeles County, California.


Birth Doulas should be able to be on call 24/7 to serve between 1-4 clients per month providing three prenatal appointments, labor and delivery support up to 24 hours, and three postpartum appointments up to 8 weeks following birth.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Bilingual Spanish-English language ability to provide perinatal support and childbirth education and birth doula support to pregnant women and persons and their families.


Provides non-medical, educational, emotional, and physical support of pregnant and postpartum women and persons, including adolescents.


Knowledge of perinatal nutrition, fetal development, prenatal care, medical procedures used in labor, anatomy and physiology of parturition and lactation, breastfeeding support, options for pain management, labor coping and support skills and physical and emotional care of postpartum mothers, and care of newborns.


Promotes non-biased, informed decision-making in pregnancy and childbirth to clients.


Ability to provide non-medical support for premature and full-term newborns, twins, and multiples and advocate for families with neonates in the NICU


Knowledge of newborn appearance, behavior, sleep states, and medical procedures.


Ability to keep accurate computer-based records and reports on current and potential client interactions and upload them to company SharePoint and report to supervisor any concerns or issues emerging with clients in a timely manner, keeping all deadlines.


Computer skills required working with Microsoft Office suites including Outlook, SharePoint, Word.


Communicates the importance of parental-infant attachment to families. Promotes maternal/paternal-infant attachment and paternal/partner involvement.


Provides breastfeeding education and support to mothers; ability to help with common lactation problems.


Knowledge of family planning methods and ability to educate clients on the advantages and disadvantages of family planning methods


Ability to care for postpartum mothers and persons and newborns, knowledge of warning signs and appropriate interventions and referral mechanisms


Ability to conduct perinatal education in Spanish one-on-one and in small groups in a classroom or on Zoom.


Ability to lift, twist, hold up another person, bend, squat, kneel, and stand on feet for extended periods.


Provide 24/7 on-call support throughout the pregnancy, birth and postpartum period with phone support during early labor, continuous in-person doula support throughout the duration of active labor, birth and the immediate postpartum period.


Must be available to do virtual meetings, home visits and work in clinics and hospitals in Santa Monica, CA and the South Bay region of Los Angeles County.


Must have personal computer or tablet, cell phone and internet access for conducting client care and communication with team members and supervisor and attend regular monthly meetings over Zoom platform.


Provides outreach to agencies, participates in webinars, promotes program through social media and direct marketing through mailings, and media campaigns, and speak to media when requested by ED.


Must participate in HIPAA Training within one week of hire and maintain client confidentiality and protection of client medical records.


Ability to attend all mandatory meetings via Zoom or WhatsApp monthly and ad hoc as needed with Doula Program Coordinator-Supervisor and Program Director.


Public speaking ability in Spanish and English to conduct presentations to community members, clients, doctor s offices on zoom and in-person and conduct health education classes to clients.


Ability to conduct community outreach such as health fairs, meetings, conferences, and other community events where the target population can be found to promote program services in Spanish.


Maintain professional and warm interpersonal relationships and communication with doula partners, doula mentor, doula coordinator and external partners.


Maintain positive interpersonal relationships and communication with clients, their support network and community/medical provider, as well as other Doulas, supervisors, apprentices, volunteers and interns.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS



  • · Graduate of a Birth Doula or Perinatal Support Specialist training through DONA, ALACE, ToBirth, ICEA, CAPPA, AWMNH, HMHBA, Birthing People Foundation, Full Circle, or other qualified organization or instructor.

  • · Certification as a Postpartum Doula preferred or willingness to get trained within 6 months of hire

  • · Certification as a Childbirth Educator or willingness to get trained within 3 months of hire.

  • · Certification as a Lactation Educator or Lactation Counselor-Educator or Breastfeeding Peer Counselor or willingness to get trained within 3 months of hire.

  • · Certified Childbirth Educator with Lamaze, ICEA, Bradley, HMHBA, CAPPA, ToBirth or willingness to get trained within 3 months of hire.

  • · Certification in HIPAA Requirements to willingness to take mandatory training within 1 week of hire.

  • Current Certification in Infant/Child/Adult CPR or willingness to get certified within 1 month of hire.

  • · Experience working as a doula or in-home visitor providing social services to a diverse population including Black, Indigenous, Asian, or Latinx, LBGTQIA , low-income persons and immigrants.

  • Demonstrate an ability to implement research-based health education strategies and best practices in perinatal health

  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and organize work projects with minimal direct supervision.

  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills in Spanish and English to provide community health education and coordinate and conduct support groups for pregnant women and mothers

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and conflict resolution ability

  • Cultural awareness training and anti-racism training or willingness to attend training within 6 months of hire

  • Experience collaborating with a variety of staff at all levels.

  • Strong attention to detail, high accuracy and timeliness when completing and submitting reports.

  • Ability to develop positive relationships with clients, doulas, providers, staff, interns, apprentices, volunteers, and supervisors

  • Ability to work flexible hours, have reliable transportation and the ability to travel throughout Los Angeles County. Mileage reimbursement provided.


Education/Experience


· Education: High school or GED (Required); some college preferred in subject areas of social sciences, women s studies, health sciences, public health, nursing, or midwifery


· License or certification: Graduate ofa Birth Doula or Certified Perinatal Support Specialist Training required; Certified Doula preferred; Certified Lactation Educator or Certified Lactation Educator-Counselor preferred; Certified Childbirth Educator preferred.


· Demonstrated experience in birth work (experience via parenting and/or early learning and development and home visitation programs is highly desirable) as a Doula and/or Midwife Assistant in OOH settings.


· Birth Experience: Labor Doula experience (attendance at 2 births prior to onboarding) Experience working as a birth doula or in-home visitor providing social services to diverse populations including BIPOC and immigrants, including adolescents.


Certificates/Licenses/Clearances


Graduate of a Birth Doula or Perinatal Support Specialist required;


Certified Birth Doula preferred;


Certified Lactation Educator or Certified Lactation Educator-Counselor preferred,
