Job Summary:

In order to effectively support our hospital’s operations, we’re in need of a veterinary assistant who can provide great veterinary care and excellent customer service to patients and their owners. The core duties of this position include animal needs assessment, diagnostics tests/exams, surgical assistance, health care provision, patient nourishment/care management, stock of medicines/tools maintenance, patient checkouts/triage and updated medical records keeping.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Another way is by reviewing the pets’ care plans as well as records which will provide us with what we need about their medical history and drugs administered on them and diet patterns they are subjected to so far. In addition to this laboratory test and studies are done so that any underlying diseases can be detected at an early stage.
  • Provision of quality patient care demands that medical staff measure vital signs, collect samples from them, administer medication including drugs plus vaccines as well as dress wounds using bandages or wraps.
  • Facilitating patient examinations and operations through collecting material/equipment needed together with bringing people to different rooms then providing physical assistance required; follow the vet's instructions.
  • Use specialized equipment / advanced techniques to deliver state-of-the-art pet care services.
  • Get the physician-recommended drugs confirmed
  • Feed/water the patients while sanitizing their cages/rooms/toolkits; watch out for potential diseases.
  • Carry out prescription deliveries according to specified guidelines along with drug administration activities that will ensure that medication logs are accurately kept and controlled drugs safely stored.
  • Ensure aseptic , humane , secure conditions by sterilizing/ packaging instruments , cleaning/sanitizing holding areas/surgery sites , storing sterile supplies/equipment , checking expiration dates , following standards/procedures , complying with laws/rules governing these practices .
  • It is important for me to keep accurate up-to-date medical records because I must record any change in my client’s condition quickly before it escalates into something more serious.
  • Update owner on status per veterinarian instruction
  • When a problem arises with your equipment, it is up to you to solve it and find the cause. Notice any strange sounds or broken parts which can be used together with the knowledge of the machine in order to know what could have caused them. This will help in solving issues as they arise.
  • Monitor stock levels, submit purchase orders for required supplies, verify their receipts and maintain records of both.
  • Stay current by being a part of ongoing learning and keeping up-to-date on research through professional journals.
  • Pets will be released after proper grooming has been done following protocol
  • Understanding and following oral and written instructions properly
  • Any other work assigned by Manager or Practice.

Assignment to the specialty medical areas listed below may require the following job functions:  

Cardiology:

  • Secure and forward collected samples to lab attendants.
  • Some treatments for heart conditions or irregular heart beats involves drugs, lifestyle adjustments or surgeries where needed.
  • Position transducers/physiographs without interfering with cardiac/vascular functions as possible.
  • Know different sensors found in pacemakers used under different physiological circumstances

Dentistry:

  • Do dental cleanings, tooth polishing plus intraoral image taking.
  • Perform nerve blocks
  • Perform dental procedures and surgeries

Dermatology:

  • Dispense and administer drugs using different modes such as injection, oral intake or topical application.
  • Clean ears and flush them gently.
  • Scrape the skin or tape samples in order to be analyzed.
  • Take a sample of the skin or ear so that it can be prepared for cytology.
  • Give anesthetic agents while monitoring vital signs.
  • Fix intravenous catheters.

Emergency:

  • Assist veterinarians during emergency care and deal with critical cases.
  • Monitor crucial vital signs, put in catheters, carry out radiographic imaging techniques.
  • Apply first aid by washing the wound properly and immobilizing it with right bandage or cast materials.
  • Inject these pets as well as collect blood samples from them.
  • You might need to be around when emergencies are happening in the ICU.

Imaging:

  • Help veterinary practitioners in diagnosing diseases in pets through such diagnostic imaging methods as digital radiography, MRI, CT scans, USG etc.

Integrative:

  • Reviewing recorded information about pet diagnoses, treatments, follow-up results may help veterinarians access the effectiveness of integrative care.

Internal Medicine:

  • Annual check-ups for healthy life insurance screen tests vaccines so that early detection of health problems is possible reducing risks of critical health situations occurring even death.

Neurology:

  • Other technical procedures including anesthesia assisting/monitoring; IV catheter insertion; venipuncture; IV injection administration; wound care management; assist with medication administration support for surgical procedures; routine Electromyography (EMG) diagnostics.

Oncology:

  • Assist veterinary practitioners in performing thorough physical examinations on pets conducting lab investigations recommending medications and surgical aids where applicable.
  • We understand how important it is to build relationships with our patients’ owners, get involved with them more meaningfully right from their first appointment onwards.
  • Provision and placement of multiple anti-cancer drugs.
  • Tell dog parents about different oncologic cancer types before they learn about them in detail.

Ophthalmology:

  • Assist veterinarians in examining the eyes of domesticated animals.
  • Facilitate diagnostic testing processes including Schirmer Tear Testing, Tonometry, Ocular Ultrasounds, Electroretinogram testing, among others.

Radiology:

  • Work together with veterinary teams to provide state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging services to critically ill pets.

Surgery:

  • Prepare pets for surgery and scrub/shave the surgical area in addition to working as a surgical nurse and operating specialized surgical equipment and supplies.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma received through completion of all mandated courses while GED is got by passing a standardized test.
  • I am an experienced vet who has proven track record of delivering excellence when it comes to animal care, treating patients and nursing both hospitalized and critically ill animals back to health.
  • For one to be considered as a veterinary technician in some states it may be necessary for him or her possess CVT, LVT, RVT, or LVMT certifications.
  • Employers can consider an alternative mix of education or certification or training or experience equal to that.

Position Requirements:

  • A good understanding of post-surgical care for pets such as preparing them for recovery after surgery; basic pet nursing skills required.
  • Knowing how catheters are placed correctly; conducting blood tests on patients; handling medical emergencies; applying digital radiographs properly.
  • Attention should be paid towards warning notices that indicate dangerous animal presence nearby.
  • Following approved protocols for patient confinement.
  • Dispense medicines and monitor sedation guidelines according to veterinary advice if necessary.
  • Competence to work among or with ill animals, potentially dangerous chemicals, sterile substances, anaesthetic gases, zoonotic diseases and bad smells.
  • The pets that are under severe stress, illness or pain should be handled gently and movements employed must not threaten them further.
  • Maturity and professionalism are crucial in approaching work tasks.
  • Applicant must be willing to work weekends and holidays as well as have a flexible schedule.
  • Such a demanding job requires constant movement of its employees as well as cleanliness and strength for lifting heavy things.
  • It is possible that the job might entail spending long periods sitting at a desk or standing/walking for long periods at a time.
  • Some activities like crawling or kneeling may be needed so as to complete certain tasks.
  • Employees could also engage in physical labor that is moderately demanding such as lifting or carrying animals not more than 50 pounds in weight while performing their duties.
  • In addition to working within the hospital environment responding to inbound phone calls, there may be other assigned duties to take care of by an employee
