Mental Health Specialist

1. Conducts mental health screenings and assessments basedon a review of available records, and clinical interviews withinmates.
2. Aspart of a mental health team, confers with other clinical staff,e.g., psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health serviceprovider's physicians, nurse, and social workers, in order togather and provide information concerning patient psychologicalproblems, to ensure treatment activities are well integrated andpatient care follow-throughoccurs.
3. Provides treatment to inmates by developing,implementing and modifying individual treatment plans based on anevaluation of needs and level offunctioning.
4. Documents treatment and evaluation activities in thehealth care record for each personseen.
5. Consults with and makes appropriate recommendations tomultidisciplinary staff (e.g., security staff, unit staff, andfacility management) regards behavior and mental health issuesaffectinginmates.
6. Maintains strict confidentiality of sensitive materialsand information at alltimes.
7. Demonstrated thorough knowledge of psychologicalcounseling theory and techniques by way of treatments andactivities used for individuals incaseload.
8. Provides appropriate mental health assessments,counseling and confrontation avoidance interventions to address theneeds of inmates incrisis.
9. Administrators mental status exams or uses otherpsychological tests and instruments as necessary to evaluateinmates' treatment, adjustment, and placementneeds.

Qualifications: 

• Graduate froman accredited college or university with a degree in social orbehavioral science or a closely related field required.
• One year experiencewhere the primary responsibility was provision of mental health orcounseling services.
• Additionalrelated work experience that includes direct provision ofcounseling services or training for same may be substituted foreducation on a year-for-year basis.
• A valid driver's licenseis preferred, unless required by contract or applicable statute.
• Minimum age requirement:Must be at least 18 years ofage.
